Phoenix roebelenii is a slender, slow-growing palm reaching 2-7 meters tall with pinnate leaves measuring 60-120 cm. Its 100 grey-green leaflets grow in a single plane, featuring scurfy pubescence on the undersides. Distinctive sharp thorns (2-4 inches long) grow along leaf stems near the trunk. Produces small yellowish flowers on 45 cm inflorescences followed by edible 1 cm drupes resembling miniature dates.
