A large perennial herb growing 0.3–1.5 meters tall with lanceolate leaves and fleshy cylindrical rhizomes reaching 20–45 cm long. Notable for its edible starch-rich rhizomes harvested 10–12 months after planting when leaves wilt. Features twin clusters of small white flowers about 90 days after planting, though seed production is rare. Thrives in tropical rainforest habitats and is recognized for its historical significance as one of the earliest domesticated plants.
