Nephthytis

Syngonium podophyllum

Etymology: Genus name 'Syngonium' comes from Greek 'syn' (together) and 'gone' (womb), referring to fused ovaries. Species name 'podophyllum' means 'foot-shaped leaf'. Originally misclassified as Nephthytis afzelii before proper genus identification in 1879.
Also known as: Arrowhead Plant, Arrowhead Plant, Arrowhead Vine, Goosefoot, African Evergreen, American Evergreen, Trileaf Wonder
Native to Latin America (Mexico through Bolivia)

Syngonium podophyllum is a tropical evergreen climbing vine with arrowhead-shaped leaves that transform from heart-shaped juvenile foliage to lobed mature leaves. It features variegated patterns in green, silver, pink, or reddish hues and uses aerial roots to climb. Native to Latin American rainforests, it grows up to 4-6 feet indoors with an annual growth of approximately 30 cm. Its distinctive leaf metamorphosis and climbing habit make it popular for indoor gardening.

Leaf Characteristics

Juvenile leaves: heart-shaped, 7-15cm long, solid green. Mature leaves: arrowhead-shaped with 3-5 lobes, up to 30cm long, often variegated with silver, white, pink or red patterns. Leaves grow alternately on climbing stems.
